Hand Made
All my spoons are 100% hand made (but bowls are turned on an electric lathe for convenience and speed). Locally-harvested wild cherry and apple branches are sawn to length, the profile and bowl are cut with axe and gouge, and the finishing is completed with knives and spoon-gouges. If I am visiting Cornwall I might bring back some oak, lime, eucalyptus or sycamore. I only use sandpaper as a last resort, when a nearly-complete spoon cannot be finished with knife or gouge - and even then I try to refinish with a blade.
When wood is too brittle or soft to use knives, the spoon rarely gets beyond its initial shaping.
